Muhammadu Buhari is a Nigerian military officer and politician who served as President of Nigeria from 2015 to 2023. Prior to his democratic presidency, he was Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1983 to 1985.
Buhari was born in Daura, Katsina State, Nigeria. He joined the Nigerian Army in 1961 and underwent military training both locally and internationally.
He rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army and served as Military Governor of the North Eastern State. In 1983, he became Nigeria’s military Head of State following a coup.
Buhari contested several presidential elections before winning in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), becoming Nigeria’s democratically elected president.
His administration focused on anti-corruption initiatives, economic reform and national security challenges, particularly insurgency in northern Nigeria.
Muhammadu Buhari remains a significant political figure in Nigeria’s modern history, known for both his military-era leadership and democratic presidency.
